Admissions Appeals Timetable
How to appeal for a school place
You have a right to appeal to an independent appeal panel if we do not offer your child a place at the Barking and Dagenham schools on your application form which are listed as a higher preference than the one we offered you.
To appeal for a place at one of our schools you will need to complete the online appeal form below. The school appeals guidance notes explain how to appeal against our decision.
Use one form for each child for any of our schools.
If you change your preferences and do not list the schools you are appealing for on your most up to date common application form, we will withdraw your appeal.
The appeal will be heard by an independent appeal panel of three people, who have no connection with the school or the School Admissions team.
The appeal panel’s decision is final and everyone must accept it.
Under the School Admission Appeals Code 2012, appeals should be heard within 30 school days of the date the appeal is made.
The academic year ends around mid to late July each year (and there is a half-term holiday in late May or early June), so if you make your appeal after the last Monday in May, it may not be considered within that academic year.

Important note for infant class size limit
By law, reception, year 1 and year 2 classes (also known as Key Stage 1) must not contain more than 30 pupils with a single teacher – this is known as infant class size prejudice.
So for Key Stage 1 classes that already have 30 pupils, the panel should only allow an appeal in exceptional circumstances. As a result of this, Key Stage 1 cases have a very limited chance of being successful.

Eastbury Community School pupils follow a broad and stimulating curriculum within a supportive and nurturing environment. Our school is one of many different cultures, faiths and languages. We follow the full National Curriculum and place an emphasis on ensuring our curriculum meets the needs and aspirations of our learners; and reflects and celebrates the achievements of different cultures, an understanding of the different faiths and the opportunity to gain accreditation in different community languages where appropriate. Our rich, broad and balanced curriculum comprises all learning and other experiences (in and out of class) that we plan for our pupils from day one in nursery to the last day of year 13. We believe in developing the whole child, through a holistic education and, with this in mind, offer a curriculum which encompasses academic and creative subjects, British values, PSHE, Character and SMSC education.
- Our curriculum is exciting and designed to inspire young people to learn and stimulate an interest in wide area of subjects. Our curriculum reflects our vision; we want everybody to be happy, healthy, safe, well educated (& career ready via university / college / apprenticeship in the digital age) and good citizens.
- We recognise that statutory requirements form only a small part of the curriculum. We therefore offer many additional opportunities particularly in sport, leadership, and creative, character & cultural education for pupils to extend their knowledge and understanding, improve their skills and explore new interests.
- The curriculum is taught and delivered with the consideration of the needs of all learners now and in their later lives. Above all our curriculum will inspire all children to nurture a passion for learning, raise aspirations and prepare them for their next step. We recognise that many of the jobs of the future have not been invented yet, and therefore concentrate on ‘learning to learn’, developing creativity, critical thinking, resilience and adaptability.
- ECS Primary Phase is committed to meeting the requirements of the EYFS Statutory framework & National Curriculum; and accelerating the progress and thereby raising the attainment of all pupils.
- ECS Secondary Phase has a three-year Key Stage 3 for years 7, 8 & 9 followed by a two year programme for years 10 and 11. Our curriculum in Key Stage 3 is broad and balanced, following the National curriculum. In Key Stage 4 pupils have the opportunity to opt from a broad range of subjects depending on their interests and aspirations
- ECS Sixth form offers a wide range of subjects to study through partnership working with four other secondary school.
- In all years our curriculum is enriched through an assembly and tutorial programme, and with many different additional activities during the day and after school.
- Our schemes of learning are carefully sequenced and reflect the content and challenge of the curriculum at each stage, (and can be found on our website). Teachers receive training in all the key areas of curriculum and pedagogy.
- We pride ourselves on delivering a curriculum across all key stages that provides for all abilities, challenging the most able and developing skills and talents for all groups of pupils. Through creative, inspirational teaching our pupils are able to home in on their strengths and develop skills in areas where they may be less confident. This enables all pupils to achieve their very best.
- Our deaf (ARP) secondary pupils follow the National and School curriculum adapted to meet their needs and delivered by both subject specialists and qualified teachers of the deaf. This is enhanced further through the teaching of British Sign Language, Deaf studies, a bespoke enrichment programme and one hour of Speech and Language therapy per week. Where appropriate in Key Stage 4 deaf pupils study one less option subject to facilitate the delivery of additional bespoke literacy and numeracy lessons.
- Our SEN/D secondary pupils follow the national curriculum and are supported either in class or by withdrawal by trained Teaching Assistants and /or Speech and language therapists and /or Education Psychologists) as appropriate to meet their needs. In Key Stage 4 some SEN/D pupils follow a Life Skills course rather than a third option subject.
- Our EAL secondary pupils follow the national curriculum and are supported either in class or by withdrawal by trained EAL Teaching Assistants as appropriate to meet their needs. In Key Stage 4 some EAL pupils (recent arrivals with no English language skills) follow a curriculum which focuses on English and Maths in preparation for sixth form courses at college.
- Our SEN/D Primary pupils follow the full EYFS / National Curriculum and are withdrawn (to our nurture room) or supported in class (for ‘rapid recovery’ intervention by fully trained Teaching Assistants and /or Speech and language therapists and /or Education Psychologists) as appropriate to meet their needs.
- Our Primary EAL Primary pupils follow the full EYFS / National Curriculum and are withdrawn or supported in class (for ‘rapid recovery’ intervention by fully trained Teaching Assistants) as appropriate to meet their needs.
Our curriculum is reviewed annually to ensure it meets the needs and aspirations of all our learners.
A typical school day
In our secondary and sixth form phase the day starts with a 20-minute tutorial or assembly, followed by 5 one hour lessons. Our secondary setting arrangements, with significantly lower than average group sizes for SEN/D and EAL pupils, allows them to be taught by subject specialists.
Our primary day begins with a ‘soft start’ of 15 minutes in order to prepare for a day of learning and this includes some intervention if needed; and one day a week each class runs a mile. The day continues for a further five hours where the pupils are taught for the most part in groups of 30 by the class teacher.
