Year 2 - Bristol

Our class is made up of enthusiastic, creative and considerate Year 2 pupils, our teacher Ms Kreeger and our amazing teaching assistants Ms Salim and Ms Mayet. In Bristol, we respect each other and are proud of each other’s achievements. We work together to create a welcome and warm class atmosphere, where every class member feels valued and loved. We hope you enjoy looking at our class page and celebrate with us across this year our learning and achievements.
We have been growing bean seeds through hydroponics. This is where the seed does not grow in soil but over water to get its nutrients. We put bean seeds over water in a zip lock bag and have bean recording their growth in a plant diary.
We have also planted some cress seeds in cotton wool and are looking forward to seeing how both plants grow using our observational skills!
We are continuing to learn the toot and are enjoying new songs to learn.
In P.E we have been learning athletics and have been working on our running. We have also been working on our school value of collaboration through our relay skills.
In Maths we have been learning about shapes and their properties. We also have been grasping how to move and turn shapes, including on a grid.
This term we learnt all about our local area and map skills. We had a local trip to Barking park. At the park, we tried to identify both physical and human features of geography. We also used a compass to help us understand where we were and give directions from the school in relation to North and South. Once we came back to school, we were able to talk about our route and plot this on a map.
We have been learning how to make our own animations.
This term we have had fun learning about Wheel and Axle mechanisms. We designed, made and evaluated our own moving car.
World Book Day
Bristol class had a fun and exciting day dressed as our favourite book characters and sharing stories. We enjoyed a livestream from World Book Day Live, which was all about using your imagination and we had a great afternoon sharing our favourite books in our classroom reading cafe.
We have been learning about Rugby passes and tries in P.E and developing on these skills.
We are continuing to enjoy learning the toot and becoming more confident at learning new songs.
On February 2st we celebrated Number Day! We wore homemade maths shirts to raise money for NSPCC and we also did a problem-solving workshop. The children loved the workshop and they got to show off their maths skills!
We have been enjoying a variety of multi-sports this term.
History - The Great Fire of London
In History we have been learning about The Great Fire of London and have learnt all about where it started in Pudding Lane. We also learnt how and why the fire spread so easily and looked at how London has changed since the fire happened. We also had an exciting workshop from an actor from The Museum of London which brought our learning to life!
The children have been enjoying their Toot lessons and are becoming more confident at learning an instrument.
In PSHE this term we are thinking about Living in the Wider World. We have been learning out belonging and community. We also thought about what makes us similar and different to each other.
In Science this term we're learning about animals including humans. We had a special delivery of eggs. We put them in an incubator and we now have 9 chicks. We will continue to study them and learn about a bird's lifecycle.
We were so excited to watch them hatch and grow.

This term our topic in R.E is What does it mean to say sorry? We have been thinking why it is important to say sorry and how when we should say sorry.
Our artist of the term is Willaim Turner. We have enjoyed exploring his paintings and thinking about how he uses light and dark tones to create mood.
We will be continuing using Talk for Writing this year and during Autumn 2 children will learning to a report as well as stories from another culture.
Due to the pandemic the phonics check was not able to happen in year 1 so it will be taking place in November 2020. We will be revising the sounds we have previously learnt and learning our phase 4,5 and 6 sounds. We will introduce Daily Supported Reading for Autumn before moving onto Destination Reader in the Spring and the Summer Term. Children will be able to take books home and take quizzes on Accelerated Reader.
Once again, we will be using Maths No Problem to support our teaching of Maths. During Autumn 1 our focus will be Calculations: Addition and Subtraction, Calculations: Multiplication of 2, 5 and 10 and Calculations: Multiplication and Division of 2, 5 and 10, length and mass.
During Autumn 2 our Science topic is ‘Materials. We will explore the properties of materials and what materials are most suitable for different jobs. We will be carrying out many experiments using lots of different materials and exploring their uses.
PBL (Project Based Learning)
Our topic this term is ‘Our World. We will learn about all the continents, oceans and different countries in our world.
We will be doing indoor PE on Wednesday afternoons and outdoor PE on Tuesday afternoons. Please ensure children have the correct PE kit on these days.
Our big question is Why are different books special for different people? We will be looking at the special books in different religions.
This year 2 children will be learning to play the Toots.
Design and Technology
During Autumn 2, year 2 will be designing, creating and making pizzas.
Our PSHE topic is Relationship and Health & Wellbeing. We will be learning about Respecting ourselves and others, Physical health and mental wellbeing and Family and Friends.
To commemorate remembrance day we made our own poppy wreaths to remember the sacrifices soldiers have made in the past.
